It was 2010 and Jerry Wascom, ExxonMobil’s Americas refining director, was worried. Wascom turned to his counterparts within the American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers Association (AFPM), the industry trade group, and asked, “Are we doing enough to protect people?”
