A central theme running through the “Better Deal” economic policy agenda that the Democratic Party rolled out this week is the importance of creating—and protecting—good-paying jobs – jobs that will help boost middle-class incomes and create new economic opportunities nationwide.
Fuel supply restrictions resulting from hurricanes and other natural disasters, often lead to price increases as the market reacts to rebalance supply and demand. To protect consumers, many states have enacted price gouging laws that limit a merchant’s ability to raise prices during an emergency.
If someone is telling you something that is too good to be true, it’s probably because it is. In this case, it’s the ethanol lobby that is advancing a bill under the guise of “consumer choice,” that...
All eyes are on Hurricane Ian, which is expected to approach Florida’s west coast later Wednesday and into Thursday bringing high winds and massive amounts of rain. Although our nation’s refiners and petrochemical manufacturers do not have facilities in the affected region, we’d like to urge the people in the area to prepare for the storm and heed all evacuation notices. Florida residents can get critical preparedness and evacuation information here .
The California Air Resources Board (CARB) adopted its Advanced Clean Cars II (ACCII) regulation. ACCII requires 35% of light-duty vehicle sales to qualify as “zero emission” by 2026 and 100% by 2035. Essentially, this amounts to a ban on new sales of traditional gasoline and diesel-powered cars and trucks. If EPA grants the waiver, millions of Americans—including many outside of California—could lose the option to buy the car or truck THEY want.

Earnings in commodities-based industries tend to be cyclical. Because of the up-and-down reality of refining, it would be a mistake to regulate or legislate based on the high points. A few quarters of earnings don’t provide an accurate representation. That context is important for answering the question of what happens with refinery profits and whether using earnings to “buy back” stock from shareholders is an appropriate use of those funds.
America’s freight rail system is an essential part of our national and global supply chains, including those for fuels and petrochemicals. While a work stoppage would be devastating, service curtailments and other strike impacts will be felt much sooner—before a strike is formally launched. As we learned this September, railroads will begin metering traffic and embargoing shipments of materials critical to the refining and petrochemical industries up to a week or more before a strike begins.
