WASHINGTON, D.C. – The American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers has released its first sustainability report. Detailing the ongoing commitment of U.S. refiners and petrochemical companies to operating sustainably, the report demonstrates how these industries are advancing solutions to some of the world’s most pressing challenges while delivering products growing global populations need to thrive.

“We are all currently navigating a pandemic that has brought hardship and loss, and driven millions of people into poverty. We also face the prospect of a global population that will grow by two billion over the coming decades,” AFPM President and CEO Chet Thompson says in the report’s introductory letter. “Our industries are prepared not only to help the world recover economically from COVID-19, but also to supply the fuel and petrochemical needs of a growing world and global middle class. We must do so in a way that is sustainable now and for generations to come, and in a way that addresses global issues such as climate change, the management of plastic waste and rising standards of living.”

U.S. fuel and petrochemical manufacturers have invaluable experience, capabilities and solutions that advance sustainability today and for the future. As detailed in this report, AFPM members are creating cleaner fuels, operating more safely and efficiently, and investing in their workforces and communities. The industries are bringing advanced recycling systems online and advocating for policies like a 95-RON fuel standard that would deliver major reductions in GHG emissions. Their work makes life better, safer, and more productive for millions of people around the world.
