WASHINGTON, D.C. — American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM) Vice President of Petrochemicals and Midstream Rob Benedict issued the following statement at the conclusion of the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC- 5.2) where a global agreement to end plastic pollution was not reached, though participating nations have agreed to continue the process:
“AFPM is hopeful a global agreement can still be reached that eliminates plastic pollution, provides nations flexibility to address their unique plastic pollution challenges, recognizes the tremendous societal benefits of plastics, and unlocks innovation across the plastics value chain to enable a more circular economy. We appreciate the United States’ leadership in these negotiations and the many efforts from the Trump administration to reach an agreement that advances practical, science-based solutions to help end plastic pollution worldwide. We encourage the United States to remain engaged in future negotiating sessions since two things are true: a growing, thriving world will need more plastic and petrochemicals, and plastic waste needs to be kept out of the environment.”
The American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM) is the leading trade association representing the makers of the fuels that keep us moving, the petrochemicals that are the essential building blocks for modern life, and the midstream companies that get our feedstocks and products where they need to go. We make the products that make life better, safer and more sustainable — we make progress.
