WASHINGTON, D.C. American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM) President and CEO Chet Thompson issued the following statement on today’s proposal from the Trump administration to revise the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) Risk Management Program (RMP) rules finalized in March of 2024:

“We welcome this RMP proposal. Safety is the top priority for every AFPM member, and a revised RMP will set a standard for strong, continuous improvement by regulated facilities while also providing the flexibility and support facilities need to innovate and customize their own safety programs.

“The previous EPA approached RMP with rigid prescriptiveness, deeming some technologies good and others suspect, and suggesting, far too often, multi-million-dollar one-size fits all mandates to achieve regulatory compliance. This undercut the very core of the RMP program — the fact that it’s a performance standard built on collaboration among industry, regulators, emergency responders and communities, with an appreciation that different facilities will have distinct approaches and benefit from using different tools and technologies to continuously improve their safety records. We trust this proposal from the Trump EPA restores that approach.”  — Chet Thompson, AFPM President and CEO
