WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Rob Benedict, AFPM Vice President of Petrochemicals and Midstream, issued the following statement commending the Surface Transportation Board (STB) proposal to repeal its regulations on “Intramodal Rail Competition,” which would pave the way for more reciprocal switching in freight rail:
“AFPM commends the STB for its effort on this proposal as it has the potential to reintroduce competition into rail markets. Repealing this regulation would allow the Board to streamline their process and remove some of the barriers in the way of rail shippers seeking reciprocal shipping agreements.
“While this proposal is a step in the right direction, U.S. freight rail remains largely uncompetitive. We are encouraged by this effort to improve service and restore competition for all shippers and urge STB to closely scrutinize the latest rail merger application with that same goal in mind. Increased competition among carriers is essential to providing rail customers with quality, efficient service and safeguarding our members’ ability to produce the fuels and petrochemicals the U.S. economy needs to thrive.” – Rob Benedict, AFPM Vice President of Petrochemicals and Midstream
