The beginning of the summer season also marks the start of the long hurricane season. While summer lasts for three short months, hurricane season hangs around much longer, from June 1 to November 30. 

AFPM recently participated in the fourth session of the United Nations’ (“UN”) negotiations for a global plastics agreement in Ottawa, Canada (INC-4). AFPM supports the UN’s ambition to eliminate additional plastic pollution. To get there, we need to accelerate a circular economy where plastic is sustainably reused or recycled instead of discarded, enabled by a global agreement that unlocks industry innovation and global investment in plastics circularity and waste management.

Dallas was abuzz recently with more than a thousand refining and petrochemical industry leaders and top names from the worlds of news, politics and global economics convening for AFPM’s 2024 Annual Meeting. With the contentious 2024 election season, massive regulatory onslaught out of Washington, D.C., and the ever-changing and rebalancing global markets all discussed at the event, five key themes stood out.

A suite of recent surveys covering Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Nevada, Ohio and Montana make clear voters are solidly opposed to government policies seeking to ban new gas cars. Collectively, opposition to gas car bans in these states is even higher than among registered voters nationally.

The House of Representatives is expected to vote on the Choice in Automobile Retail Sales (CARS) Act (H.R. 4468) in the coming week. This legislation, originally introduced by Representative Tim Walberg (MI-5) earlier this year, would prohibit the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from finalizing its proposal to require roughly 70% of new car and truck sales to be “zero tailpipe emission” in less than 10 years.
