Every day, AFPM members make products that improve our lives and contribute to human progress — including fuels like gasoline, diesel and jet fuel that facilitate access to vital health services, and petrochemicals used as building blocks to create healthcare equipment, devices and technologies.
As Hurricane Lane, currently a Category 2 storm, makes its way towards Hawaii, our priority today is supporting Par Pacific Holdings, which is temporarily shutting down its 93,500 barrel per day refinery in Kapolei, on the island of Oahu, to ensure the safety of workers, and the community and environment surrounding the facility.
If you read the headlines in the news lately — “Greenhouse Gas Emissions From Plastics Are Predicted to Rise,” “New Texas petrochemical projects add millions of tons of greenhouse gas pollution, report finds” — you’d think emissions from the petrochemical industry were getting worse.
Rosemount, Minn. – The flame at the top of a 400-foot stack here at the Flint Hills Resources' Pine Bend refinery used to burn so brightly and so consistently that some say it was used to train pilots to land planes at the Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport.
Our members continuously look for opportunities to enhance safety and recognize that an effective way to improve process safety performance throughout the industry is to learn from one other. Advancing Process Safety is a collection of programs that provide the industry with more frequent and effective opportunities to share experiences and knowledge.
AFPM collects occupational injury and illness data from all regular member refining and petrochemical sites in the U.S. annually. The information collected is from the OSHA 300A Summary Log for both company employees and contractors (contractor aggregate). This data is used to compile the AFPM Survey of Occupational Injuries & Illnesses (I&I Survey). Sites that submit data may be eligible for AFPM Safety Awards.
