Process safety involves applying good operating, engineering, maintenance and other practices to the management of manufacturing processes that use hazardous chemicals. Fuel and petrochemical manufacturers’ safety practices are regulated by OSHA’s Process Safety Management Standard for Highly Hazardous Chemicals and EPA’s Chemical Accident Prevention Program, as well as several other OSHA General Industry standards.
Refining and petrochemical sites are regularly monitored to ensure their processes are being managed safely and in accordance of the law. Process safety management audits are regularly conducted and sites submit risk management plans every five years to comply with regulations. In addition, fuel manufacturers voluntarily comply with a number of additional process safety standards and audits in order to promote a safe working environment.
