American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM) is a dynamic trade association representing high-tech American manufacturers of virtually the entire U.S. supply of gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, other fuels, and home heating oil, as well as the petrochemicals used as building blocks for thousands of vital products in daily life, from paints to plastics, space suits to solar panels, and medicines to mobile phones. As a national trade association representing American refineries and petrochemical companies, AFPM brings together staff, members, affiliates, and thought leaders at major conventions and smaller gatherings, both virtual and in-person, throughout the year.

As we continue to grow and expand our reach, we are excited to announce an opening for an Associate, Communications. The Associate will report into the Manager, Editorial & Executive Communications and support AFPM content development, media engagement, the executive thought leadership program, and Communications Committee.
Responsibilities
- Contribute ideas and support the development of creative and written content for AFPM owned channels, policymakers and media, including blogs, statements, long-form opinion pieces, one-pagers, and other issue education and mobilization content
- Participate in media relations activities, including list building, pitching and distributing press releases
- Assist in the development of quarterly analytics reports for AFPM internal team and semi-annual media analysis and outlook reports for AFPM members
- Monitor, compile and send daily news clips o Flag opportunities for potential engagements based on daily news and social media monitoring
- Track and communicate real-time media coverage of AFPM statements, interviews, etc. with internal Communications team
- Maintain tracker of media hits
- Conduct research and compile briefing materials to support AFPM executive media, speaking engagements and strategic outreach
- Track progress against workback plans and coordinate logistics support for thought-leadership events
- Help to compile, review and proof presentation materials, ensuring alignment with AFPM brand style
- Capture AFPM Communications Committee minutes; manage internal review and approval
- Maintain AFPM Communications Committee member briefing book
- Support AFPM-owned website content updates
- Support content sharing and updates for Committee members via MyAFPM platform
Qualifications
- 1 year of communications and/or relevant office experience gained through internships or early-career roles
- Collaborative spirit, intellectual curiosity, analytical reasoning and strong organization
- An appetite to understand and visually simplify complex energy topics for a variety of audiences
- Ability to meet deadlines and stay on top of long-term projects in a dynamic environment
- Conscientious with details and able to incorporate feedback and implement edits across deliverables
- Familiarity with AP Style and basic design software (InDesign, Canva, etc.), or a willingness to learn those things, preferred
