AFPM’s Communications Team seeks an experienced public affairs communicator with a proven record of building winning advocacy campaigns, coordinating coalitions and mobilizing grassroots audiences. The Manager will have three core responsibilities:

  • Developing campaign communications, mobilization plans and related content to augment AFPM policy engagement on key issues at the federal, state and local levels
  • Overseeing and partnering with consultants on communications, grassroots/grass-tops and digital issue campaigns at the federal, state and local levels
  • Owning and actualizing the mobilization strategy for EMPOWER, AFPM’s industry-wide employee engagement program

As the national trade association representing American fuel refineries and petrochemical companies, AFPM engages in issues at the federal, state and local levels on behalf of our members. The Communications Manager, Campaigns and Advocacy will produce content, oversee external consultants and work hand-in-glove with AFPM State & Local Advocacy and Government Affairs. This position will also play a key role in building out the advocacy arm of EMPOWER, AFPM’s employee engagement and mobilization program.

Responsibilities

Campaign & Mobilization Planning, bridging the gap between communications and federal and state government relations

  • Monitor policy challenges and build campaigns to advance AFPM’s objectives
  • Develop campaign communications toolkits around key issues, including letters, template op-eds, draft testimony, fact sheets, FAQ documents, etc.
  • Manage field teams, consultants and grassroots, grass-tops programs

Bring EMPOWER mobilization to life by providing industry employees opportunities to share their views with policymakers

  • Drive EMPOWER digital and field advocacy communications and activities
  • Work directly with member companies to identify potential EMPOWER resource needs and opportunities to promote the program
  • Build out the issue education section of EMPOWER’s in-person training
  • Manage advocacy reports, including company-specific engagement metrics

AFPM Newsroom

  • Within the AFPM Newsroom, monitor and report out on issue updates and campaign activations relating to fuel and transportation policies
  • Draft and contribute to blogs, statements, one-pagers, issue resource pages, backgrounders, etc.
  • Keep the Newsroom team informed about key policy timelines and content needs

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree or commensurate relevant experience
  • At least six years of relevant work experience; energy or manufacturing industry experience a plus
  • Campaign and/or advocacy experience, including mastery of digital and traditional campaign mobilization and engagement tactics
  • Clear writing and speaking skills, appropriate for grass-roots audiences
  • A high degree of problem-solving and organizational skills, and an ability to quickly develop and implement communications strategies and tactics
